Supporting Non-verbal Children Living with Serious Illness

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, the participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased understanding of how Child Life Specialists collaborate with the interdisciplinary palliative care team to apply evidence-informed, non-verbal communication strategies that empower and support meaningful connection throughout serious illness.
  • Recognize and articulate the role of ongoing therapeutic communication in pediatric palliative care, understanding the transition to non-verbal communication as a shift—not a loss—in how children express themselves, and affirming that opportunities for meaningful connection and emotional presence remain.
